Susie was installed by Bishop Jonathan as Honorary Canon in Portsmouth Cathedral on Sunday 22 September 2024. Having joined our benefice in October 2018 as Associate Vicar, in October 2023 Susie was licensed and installed by the Bishop of Portsmouth as Priest-in-Charge. Susie is also Area Dean of Petersfield Deanery, those responsibilities running alongside her regular ministry; she is also on Bishop's Council. These additional appointments ensure that Susie is at the heart of events and decision-making in the diocese. Susie has two grown-up daughters, three adult step-children and a lively black Labrador. She completed her doctorate studies at Chester University. As Priest-in-Charge Susie commits Sundays and three days a week to the benefice, and she appreciates the respect of this as a half-time role; she is ably supported by the rest of the Ministry Team.

Sue is the mother of four children, the oldest of whom died in 2002, and she has one grandson and two adult step-daughters. Her hobbies include reading, and watching almost every type of competitive sport! Sue's ministry journey in the benefice started with her being licensed as an LLM (licensed lay minister, formerly known as Reader). During her training she felt a calling to the priesthood so continued her studies on the Portsmouth Pathway of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, being ordained as deacon in June 2023 and then as priest in June 2024, both at Portsmouth Cathedral. Sue is Assistant Curate licensed to two benefices (see above). She is also an elected member of the Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Board of Education; Chair of the Portsmouth Diocesan Parish Share Review Group; a member of the Diocesan Audit Committee; and a Bishop's Nominee to Diocesan Synod.

The Revd Dr Pippa Madgwick (PtO)

Mobile: 07923 933649

Pippa joined the ministry team in April 2025 when Bishop Jonathan gave her Permission to Officiate in the benefice. She, with her husband Graham who is a Licensed Lay Minister, moved into the area in 2024 upon her retirement from being rector of ten rural parishes in Rutland. After ordination in 2007, Pippa was for ten years a self-supporting curate, then Associate Priest, in St Albans, during which time she also continued her agricultural research as a molecular biology graduate, helped lead an interfaith women’s group, and ran a mother+toddler group. Now enjoying being nearer to her three sons and their families, Pippa’s hobbies include gardening, embroidery, cycling, and ‘walking up mountains’, and she looks forward to exploring the local area.

Mrs Caroline Hilton, Licensed Lay Minister (PtO)
[email protected]

In September 2022 Caroline celebrated 25 years in the Licensed Lay (formerly known as Reader) ministry. Sometimes describing herself as a 'Pavement Priest', Caroline channels her ministry as spiritual director and teacher through listening to people and to God through her contemplative practice. She thrives on assisting people to govern and deepen their relationship with God. Caroline leads an active life, enjoying hospitality, gardening, cycling and lively conversation on a broad range of topics.
