Reflection for Sunday 8th June 2025Day of Pentecost Genesis 11.1–9, Acts 2.1–21, John 14.8–17[25–27]Did you ever have one of those days when halfway through, you thought: “Well, I didn’t expect that to happen when I woke up this morning”? Life has a way of surprising us, doesn’t it? Each new day carries the potential for something unexpected. This Sunday is Pentecost, the day we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the first followers of Jesus. I wonder what went through the disciples’ minds that morning? Gathered together in one room, probably still frightened, surrounded by thousands of pilgrims who had travelled to Jerusalem for the festival. Theologian E.P. Sanders estimates that up to half a million Jews gathered in the city for such occasions. Then suddenly, everything changed. Not gently, not quietly – but with wind and fire, the Spirit of God rushed in. And those frightened followers were transformed. They began speaking in languages they had never learned, declaring the wonders of God to strangers from all over the known world. What I love most is what they didn’t do. They didn’t sit and make a plan. They didn’t debate how to use church funds or whether the coffee should be fair trade. They didn’t fuss about noticeboards or hymn choices. They just… went. Out into the streets. Out into the world. Out to tell people about Jesus – his death, resurrection, and the new life available to all.Peter stood up and declared that the prophecy of Joel had come true – that God’s Spirit would now be poured out on all people. Not just prophets or priests, but everyone. You. Me. Everyone who believes. And that means you too can be empowered by the Holy Spirit. You might not speak in tongues or preach to a crowd, but you can love someone in Jesus’ name. You can invite a friend to church. You can pray for someone or offer a word of hope. Maybe you're unsure whether the Spirit is in you? If you believe in Christ, then He is. The flame may be small, but it can grow. So this week, I invite you to say yes to God again. To pray for more of His Spirit. Ask Him to bring something new into your day. Let Him surprise you. Because when God moves, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Blessings and prayers, Emma
