St Lawrence Church Great Waldingfield and friends invite you to a very special Heritage Weekend. Across the weekend we will be exploring and celebrating the history of our community, our church and our very special reredos – the subject of a current restoration project thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and national lottery players. The Heritage Weekend runs from Saturday 25 October (1100-1600) to Sunday 26 October (1200-1600) at St Lawrence Church, Great Waldingfield. Attractions include:A village history EXHIBITION curated by Gt Waldingfield History GroupHeritage CRAFT Activities and GAMES for the young and young at heart REFRESHMENTS in aid of St Lawrence’s Church And the chance to FIND OUT MORE about the Reredos Restoration Project and the historic significance of this celebrated feature of our village church.A wide-ranging programme of talks, tours, storytelling, living history and heritage craft is also planned. The weekend will be opened by a special talk from David Carrington of Skillington Workshop who are undertaking the restoration of the church’s reredos, and end with a joyful concert from early music specialists, Hexachordia.There is something for all ages. St Lawrence Church is proud to announce a £102,237 grant from TheNational Lottery Heritage Fund to restore the rare mosaic Reredos in ourGrade 1 Listed Church. We will also be holding a number of HeritageEngagement Events for the local community to learn about our sharedhistory.The Reredos was built in 1869 by the Rev Baily and his family, fromstones gathered during their travels throughout Italy, Egypt and the HolyLand. This unique mosaic is of great historical significance. Without thisfunding from the Heritage Fund it could be lost forever, and our thanksgo to National Lottery players for their support. The National LotteryHeritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using moneyraised by National Lottery players they support projects that connectpeople and communities to heritage.Our first event is the ‘Ride & Stride’ on 13 Sep. This event is run by theSuolk Historic Churches Trust, who have also given us a grant of £6000towards the Reredos Restoration, for which we are very grateful. SuolkChurches will be open for the day, and walkers and cyclists take in asmany churches as possible on the day, raising money throughsponsorship. I will be taking part! The sister event (Pedal & Drive) is forvintage and classic cars, and is held on the same day. Our second eventis a Quiz Night on 27 Sep; please join us in the Village Hall.
