Churchyards are a unique environment where the natural world touches heaven. A Churchyard is the final resting-place on earth for many of those who have died and have been commended to God’s nearer presence. They are a place to both mourn the loss of loved ones and to celebrate their life.

Churchyards are also a habitat for many forms of life which otherwise struggle to survive in the modern world: hedgehogs, slowworms, butterflies, bumblebees, and more. For this reasons, Churchyards have been a focus for recent thinking about the Church’s ecological commitments.

Love your Burial Ground Week and Churches Count on Nature, both organised by Caring for God’s Acre, bring together these two aspects of our Churchyard. This service is offered as an opportunity to consider how the sacred and ecological aspects of our Church life can support one another.
