About Us

St Mary’s Priory Church, Tutbury, is a Christian church seeking to proclaim Jesus as Lord, to serve God and share His love with our neighbours.  Our welcome is warm and we seek to combine the best of church traditions and sung worship, enjoyed by older and younger people.  We encourage newcomers to become involved at whatever level they feel comfortable with.

At 10.00 am on the second, third and fourth Sunday of the month there is a Parish Holy Communion Service - Common Worship.  On the first Sunday, we have a Worship for All (child-friendly) Service of Holy Communion.   When there is a fifth Sunday, we have a combined morning service with our 2 sister churches within the ART Benefice, the venue rotates between the 3 churches.

The Church has a strong musical tradition and we have an accomplished organist and a robed choir.  The bells, eight in all, are rung as regularly.  We would welcome more ringers and people wishing to join the choir are always welcome.

Our Norman church building dates from the eleventh century and is in a village setting, close to Tutbury Castle with views over the Dove Valley to the Peak District.  In 2010, the North Aisle was refurbished to provide meeting room, kitchenette, toilet and baby changing facilities - The Priory Suite, which can be used for a variety of purposes.  In 2019 we upgraded the lighting system and in 2021 made major changes to the South  Entrance from outside providing a level, easy and safe access into the building.

Regrettably we are unable to leave the church open during daylight hours midweek, but on a Saturday from 10.00 am til 12 noon, the church is open for "Priory Pantry" " and all are welcome to join us.   Priory entry is a cafe providing hot and cold drinks and great home baking, and sometimes even bacon butties.  Saturday mornings also gives the opportunity for people planning a wedding or baptism to come along and look at the church building and there is usually someone available to answer any questions.   If you would like to know the history of the church, again we would be happy to share this with you.  If you would like an Historical Tour, this can also be arranged.

Since 2014, we have been  part of the ART Benefice together with St. Mary's, Rolleston on Dove and Holy Trinity, Anslow.

Our church (and Benefice) are in vacancy.  Our  previous Rector retired on 31.12.2024.    For news and information please contact our churchwardens, Margaret Pyle and Jackie Benstead.   We hope to see you soon.
