DETAILS OF BURIALS IN THE CHURCHYARD

The churchyard surrounding the church of St Thomas a Becket covers a large area with numerous graves.  Over the years is has been necessary to grow so as to accommodate more burials  -  and is designated Old Ground (OG), Middle Ground (MG) and New Ground (NG).

In 1997 it was closed to any new burials, and it is now only possible to inter ashes.  These can be recorded but nor marked in the churchyard with a plaque or marker.

In the late 1970s a very detailed survey was undertaken in the churchyard to locate, record and map all the burials recorded in the registers.  Wherever possible inscriptions were also recorded.

This record has been kept up-to-date recording all interments.

Every attempt has been made to record as much as possible but this is an old churchyard and the  list is by no means complete.. many burials were not marked by headstones, many stones have been damaged and some have been moved or removed.  In addition many of the inscriptions have become so weathered that it no longer possible to record them -  many of those recorded in the 1970s are no longer legible.

Our oldest stone has a date of 1697.

Many people visit the churchyard tracing family history and it is hoped that this record will be of some use to those seeking information.  A full list and map can be found below and a copy can also be  found in church.
