This is a wonderfully joyful start to our celebration of Easter! The lights of the church are dimmed and the congregation, all with small unlit candles, gather outside the porch where a new fire is kindled. The Paschal Candle, symbolising Christ, the Light of the World, is prepared and lit and the light is carried through the church and progressively passed to the whole congregation. The Exsultet, that great Easter song of praise, is sung and then, during the singing of the Gloria, all the lights of the church are switched on and every candle is lit and the great round stone in the Easter Garden is rolled away revealing the empty grave clothes. We renew our Baptismal Vows and end with joyful prayers.
