Lent Lectures: Issues of Faith

Wednesdays 2.30pm in the Cathedral quire and available as a recording afterwards

A weekly series of talks hosted by the Dean and Canons with a series of speakers helping us to reflect on issues of the day through the eyes of faith. Each talk will be followed by the opportunity for questions.

Jo Chamberlain is the National Environment Officer for the Church of England, a role she has been in for the last 6 years. Prior to that, she worked for Christian Aid, an organisation working with those at the forefront of the impacts of climate breakdown. The world around us is in trouble, and people are not taking care of God’s good creation. Christians are called to love God and to love our neighbour. This talk aims to explore what that means when we look and see a world confronted by rising global temperatures, accelerating loss of nature and an expanding problem of plastic waste.

This lecture traces how Christian theology moved from the wounded, risen body of Christ to an idealised vision of bodily perfection—and how that shift has shaped our theology, worship, and heritage. Drawing on insights from my book ‘Breaking Not Broken’, I will be calling the Church back to a resurrection anthropology where wounds are not erased but revealed as sites of glory, truth, and belonging.

The Revd Canon Timothy Goode is Canon for Congregational Discipleship and Nurture at York Minster and a disability theologian. His recent book ‘Breaking Not Broken’ examines how ableism has shaped Christian theology, heritage, and practice, and how a risen-body anthropology offers a more faithful alternative.

Maundy Thursday Sung Eucharist followed by the Watch to midnight

Occurring
for 1 hour, 15 mins
Venue
Ripon Cathedral
Address
Minster Road Ripon, HG4 1QT, United Kingdom

7.30pm-8.45pm followed by The Watch to midnight

Join us this Maundy Thursday for a service of Holy Communion in which the Last Supper is re-enacted; Dean John, as leader of the cathedral community, washes the feet of a dozen members of the congregation. He says, “This powerfully moving act, prompted by the humility and self-sacrifice of Jesus doing the same for his disciples, reveals how the nature of Christ’s leadership is still a challenge to all leaders 2,000 years later.”

At the end of this service the altars are stripped. The reserved sacrament (the consecrated bread from the Eucharist) is processed to the Altar of Repose and the congregation now imagines itself in the Garden of Gethsemane attempting to keep watch and to pray as Jesus asks his disciples to do.

Throughout the evening you are encouraged to come and go and to keep watch. This vigil comes to an end at midnight when we remember how Jesus was arrested with a kiss of betrayal.

Darke in A minor; Ubi caritas Duruflé; Ave verum corpus Byrd; Tantum ergo Duruflé
