Maundy Thursday Sung Eucharist followed by the Watch to midnight

Occurring
for 1 hour, 15 mins
Venue
Ripon Cathedral
Address
Minster Road Ripon, HG4 1QT, United Kingdom

7.30pm-8.45pm followed by The Watch to midnight

Join us this Maundy Thursday for a service of Holy Communion in which the Last Supper is re-enacted; Dean John, as leader of the cathedral community, washes the feet of a dozen members of the congregation. He says, “This powerfully moving act, prompted by the humility and self-sacrifice of Jesus doing the same for his disciples, reveals how the nature of Christ’s leadership is still a challenge to all leaders 2,000 years later.”

At the end of this service the altars are stripped. The reserved sacrament (the consecrated bread from the Eucharist) is processed to the Altar of Repose and the congregation now imagines itself in the Garden of Gethsemane attempting to keep watch and to pray as Jesus asks his disciples to do.

Throughout the evening you are encouraged to come and go and to keep watch. This vigil comes to an end at midnight when we remember how Jesus was arrested with a kiss of betrayal.

Darke in A minor; Ubi caritas Duruflé; Ave verum corpus Byrd; Tantum ergo Duruflé

Ripon Cathedral

Ripon Cathedral is a beautiful, ancient church with a history reaching back to the 7th Century. It is a mother church for the Diocese of Leeds and home for the cathedra (throne) of the Bishop of Leeds. We enjoy welcoming both pilgrims and tourists, hoping that they will capturea glimpse of God’s love for them through the witness of this remarkable building and its people. We look forward to welcoming you.
