The flower team at Christ Church are ahead of the game! Linda Gilbey and her team have been using artificial flowers for many years, and people have barely noticed! It began nearest during covid when we weren't allow to attend Church Services, so artificial flower arrangements were put in. Besides being a sustainable option, it was so much cheaper. Now the artificial flowers are re-used again and again in different arrangements and colours and for different seasons of the Church year. Greenery, however, is obtained from the Church gardens or from the gardens of members of the congregation which gives the effect of "real" flower arrangement. People ask from time to time whether the flowers are real because they aren't quite sure! It means we are not purchasing flowers which are flown in from Holland or even from as far as Kenya which has a high carbon footprint. So this is a little contribution towards saving the planet! The only exception is at Easter when real lilies are purchased, but even then there are artificial flowers hidden among them - you'd have to be sharp to spot them! Yes, there is more we could do to ensure our flower arrangements are sustainable, but this is a good start to help sustain the work of Creation.
