About Us
St Nicholas has been situated in the heart of Castle Hedingham for almost one thousand years. We are proud of the beauty and historical appeal of the building. It is Plantagenet in origin but has many features of late Norman architecture. The church's fabric also contains material from an earlier Norman church with an apsidal chancel, dedicated to St James, whose cathedral at Santiago de Compostela has been a focus of pilgrimage for centuries.
This is the mother church of the Hundred of Hinkford from which Hedingham takes its ancient name 'Hidingforda'.
There is a unique choir screen from 1357, and three original 12th century doors and a magnificent and rare window, all creating a fine old English church of great distinction.
In such a wonderful and inspiring church, it will probably not surprise you to hear that we enjoy a traditional form of service accompanied by our organist. We offer a very warm welcome to everyone who would like to join us at one of our services, our coffee mornings or special events such as a wedding. Our door is always open and we invite you to come and see what we have to offer.
