Some history of St Andrew's:
St Andrew's dates back to the 14th century. The architecture is of Gothic Perpendicular style. The church crypt has 49 lead coffins containing the remains of the Harvey family. Sir Eliab Harvey was the commander of the Temeraire at the Battle of Trafalgar. The remains of Dr William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of the blood, are in a sarcophagus in the Harvey Chapel above the crypt.
The tower fell down in 1872 leaving the west end of the church open to the elements. It was made weatherproof and then left until a visit by some members of the Harveian Society who were appalled at the conditions in which William Harvey rested. They raised money and rebuilt the tower to nave height. The completed tower was eventually dedicated in 1962.
