Leçons de Ténèbres

Occurring
for 1 hour, 15 mins
Venue
St Michael & All Angels
Address
Northcote Road/Palmerston Road WALTHAMSTOW, LONDON., E17 6PQ, United Kingdom

Today 16 April is Spy Wednesday. This by tradition is the day when Judas decides that he is going to betray Jesus to the authorities. At 10.00 a.m. we will celebrate Morning Prayer and Holy Rosary, when the Sorrowful Mysteries are our theme. This evening at 7.30 p.m. a special sacred concert of François Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres (Tenebrae = darkness) will be given as part of the Music in the Village series. Free admission, donations gratefully received.

Tenebrae service was originally at matins and lauds on the 3 days before Easter, including during the evening of Spy Wednesday, the day before Maundy Thursday. It was not permitted to put on secular music concerts during Holy Week, only sacred music, and so Couperin composed his remarkable Leçons de Ténèbres.

St Michael & All Angels

St Michael and all Angels' is a friendly multicultural church located in the heart of Walthamstow, very close to the vibrant high street.

We are currently in interregnum at St Michael's but are looking forward to our new full-time priest very, very soon.

We would like to thank Fr. Alex Summers and his family for their hard work and for bringing the community together in the 6 years they were with us.

Please pop in and join us at one of our services. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram @stmichaelstow.

God Bless
