Holy Communion for the Sunday next before Lent: celebrant the Venerable Chigor Chike, Archdeacon of Lewisham and Greenwich. Junior Church takes place at the same time in the hall.
We are grateful to Chigor for leading this service while Rev. Tola is away.
First reading: 2 Peter 1: 16–21
Gospel: Matthew 17: 1–9
It is inevitable that when the first reading in our service comes from the New Testament - from Acts or one of the Epistles - its subject matter is related to Gospel events that have already happened. Both readings today refer to the Transfiguration: the Gospel describes the revelation to Peter, James and John of Christ in his full glory, and in the Epistle Peter draws upon this experience to underpin his conviction of Christ's divinity.
In Matthew's account of the Transfiguration, Jesus tells the disciples to keep the events to themselves until his earthly ministry has been completed. Perhaps this was so that they could do as Peter does in his letter, to place the vision in its full context of Jesus's incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection.
