Family Communion for the 11th Sunday after Trinity: celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo.
First reading: Jeremiah 2. 4 – 13
Gospel: Luke 14. 1, 7 – 14
Our readings today are essentially about humility in the widest sense - the recognition of our relationship with God, our place in human society, and the way we should treat those who are relatively more of less privileged than we are (bearing in mind that worldly fortune can change very quickly).
For once, the image above depicts an example we should not follow (the whole painting is attached below). In Nicholas Poussin's 'Adoration of the Golden Calf' the Israelites have abandoned God in favour of a golden statue; in the full picture, Moses can be made out in the distance on the left, looking on in horror. The Israelites are celebrating, but the tone of the painting is threatening - no good will come of this. In our world, we are unlikely to worship idols, but we need to be careful not to let anything take the place of God in our lives, be it something material or concern about our own status.
