Holy Communion and Junior Church

Occurring
for 1 hour, 15 mins
Venue
Kidbrooke, St Nicholas
Address
Whetstone Road Kidbrooke London, SE3 8PX, United Kingdom

Holy Communion for the 18th Sunday after Trinity: celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo. Junior Church takes place at the same time in the hall.

First Reading: 2 Timothy 3.14 - 4.5
Gospel: Luke 18. 1 – 8

Today's readings are both about patience and persistence. Paul exhorts Timothy to persevere with his mission and to sustain his own faith, even when it is difficult to do so, and in the Gospel Jesus uses a surprising metaphor to convey the importance of perseverance in prayer. The parable of the unjust judge is not really about the judge at all, but about the widow, and the way she sustains her belief in justice despite discouragement.

The widow is brought to the foreground in the painting (above and attached) by the Dutch artist Pieter de Grebber (1628; © Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest). Her radiant calm, and the way she is shown as literally closing the book on her problems, underlines the importance, and the rewards, of sustaining faith and belief in the face of adversity.
