Mission and Outreach Worker - St Mark's Downham

St Mark’s Downham is looking for someone who has the gifts and calling as an evangelist who can lead, equip and encourage us in evangelism. The right person for this role is someone who:

Loves Jesus, Loves Downham, and Loves the Local Church.

We are looking for someone who will work alongside the vicar to renew St Mark’s and develop new weekday and daytime services that reach people who struggle to connect with Sunday church. Someone who can coordinate enquirers courses and events and develop resources for the congregation to use as many are eager to see the church grow but lack the skills/confidence to share Jesus with the community.

In the long term we envision that this team member could work with the vicar to develop working class worship, evangelism and discipleship resources (songs, prayers, intro to Christianity sessions, etc).

Some potential areas for the Outreach Worker to focus: Addiction Recovery, Music and Worship, Health and Wellbeing (Mental and Physical), Working Class worshipping community and Enquirers Course/Space, Youth Outreach

The Church and the Community:

St Mark’s Downham is one of the churches on the Downham estate in Lewisham and is one of the 10% most deprived parishes in the country. The Sunday service at St Mark’s dwindled after COVID but midweek and fresh expressions have seen a spark of energy and life. This project is about resourcing our ambitious plans to take that spark of life and seeing it become a fire of Gospel energy.

Terms, Conditions and Pay: The salary for the role will be £20 per hour and will start at 8 hours per week (to be allocated in discussion with the candidate and according to the needs of St Mark’s – currently projects take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. We are applying for funding to expand the hours available for this role, however some of these funds require the person to be in post before we can apply. This role has a Genuine Occupational Requirement for the postholder to be a practising Christian.

To Apply: For more information, to arrange a visit to St Mark’s (strongly encouraged) and details of how to apply please contact Rev. Nick Walsh, 07774516204 / [email protected]

Closing Date: 12 noon on Sunday 12th October 2025
