Redevelopment of St John's Church

Due to Coronavirus this building project has been deferred for a year, and will start in July 2021.

Hertsmere Borough Council have granted full planning permission for the “demolition of existing St John's Church and Hall and redevelopment of site to provide replacement church building with nursery facilities, 3 x 3 bed affordable houses, 3 x 2 bed affordable flats, with associated parking, bin storage and provision of temporary accommodation for use by the church during construction”.

The general reason given was that “the proposed development would not harm the character and appearance of the surrounding area, nor would it cause significant harm to the residential amenity of the neighbouring dwellings, flooding or highways/parking.”

A number of conditions are applicable, most of them standard conditions, including the provision of construction and car park management plans; of schemes for the protection of the existing trees and for surface water drainage; and submission of samples of the materials to be used, in order to ensure that the finished appearance of the development will enhance the character and visual amenities of the area.

Significant work is still required before any demolition or construction work can begin, in order to finalise internal details of the new church and hall; agree the temporary accommodation for the continuation of church services, the Nursery, Messy Café and other regular events; find suitable accommodation for other users; decide what items should be kept from the current buildings and how they are to be stored during the construction phase; finalise agreements between Hertsmere, the Diocese and Phillimore Trust; keep neighbours and the community informed etc.

The intention remains to start the demolition/construction work at the end of July 2020.
