We mark the beginning of the season of waiting and preparation for the coming of Jesus with this traditional service of carols and readings. All are welcome, and no booking is required.

We mark the first Sunday in Advent with a sung service of Choral Matins, the first as part of our Advent and Christmas Worship since 2019. This service also includes the traditional University Sermon for Advent Sunday, preached by The Right Reverend Mark Tanner, Bishop of Chester and a member of the House. Our Choral Eucharist for the First Sunday in Advent will take place afterwards at 11.05am, following which refreshments will be served in the Cathedral. You are very welcome to join us for one or both services.

This service of Five Lessons and Carols sung by the Cathedral Choir is presented by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, whose generosity in support of our mission and ministry is recognised during the service. All are warmly invited to join us, and no booking is required to attend.

Olivier Messiaen’s prayerful organ cycle responding to the birth of Christ forms the heart of this evening’s service which weaves the French composer’s nine musical meditations with readings and prayers. This special service replaces our usual worship offering of Evensong on this day.

“Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning”.In this traditional celebration for Christmas Night, we gather for the first celebration of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The preacher will be The Revd Canon Professor Luke Bretherton.

We warmly invite you to join us at the first of our two choral services on Christmas Day, sung by our Cathedral Choir. Our preacher will be the Dean, The Very Revd Professor Sarah Foot.

Worship with us as we greet the birth of Christ together in this joyful service. The sermon will be preached by The Bishop of Oxford, The Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft.
