Parish Eucharist

On Sundays we do many of the things that Christians have been doing for millenia. We celebrate the Eucharist at 10am. ‘Eucharist’ is the Greek word for thanksgiving. We sing with joy, we pray knowing that God loves us and hears our prayers. We read the Bible, hearing the story of God and God’s people, knowing that we too are part of that story. We take, bless, brake and share the bread and wine of Holy Communion, knowing that as we do so, Christ is present with us.

The service lasts about an hour. There’s no formal dress code – come as you are (your jeans are fine!). You can expect hymns with organ, more contemporary songs from different genres, and music from right across the centuries. Children are always welcome.

After the service we love to spend time getting to know one another over Tea, Coffee and biscuits.

Held every Tuesday between 11am-1pm at The Parish Centre on Hall Grove (opposite the doctors surgery), Mary and Isabel’s Compassionate Cafe is a wonderful space to meet new people, enjoy excellent refreshments and make new friends. It’s a new partnership between St Mary Magdalene Church and Isabel Hospice. Everyone is welcome, and we offer a special welcome to those who are nearing the end of life, their carers, and anyone who might be feeling a bit lonely or isolated. If you’d welcome getting to know some local friends, seeing some friendly faces and some companionship, just drop in, or get in touch if you have any questions.

This informal candlelit service is quiet and reflective, and includes Bible readings, prayers and times of silence as well as music. The service lasts about 40 minutes and the chants are simple, easy to learn and very beautiful.

Come to St Mary Magdalene before the busy week starts, to unscramble yourself, and find the time to relax, reflect and rest in God.

Taizé is the home of an international ecumenical Christian community in southern Burgundy, France, made up of over a hundred brothers.  It was founded by Brother Roger during World War II to work for reconciliation among Christians and through this for the reconciliation and peace of the world. Regular times of prayer, chants and silence are at the heart of the community’s daily life and thousands of young people travel there every year to take part in this form of prayer and reflection. The profound simplicity and beauty of the worship is now also used in services around the world, inspired by the ideals of justice and reconciliation which it embodies.
