Best Devon Churchyard award goes to St Michael's Alphington

The Annual Award from CPRE is given to churchyards which are well-managed, providing a peaceful haven for both people and wildlife. They look for churchyards which strike a balance between being an area of peace and contemplation but also allowing nature to flourish. They look for places which actively encourage and help to sustain wildlife, creating an environment which is welcoming to all.

Thirty one churches entered the competititon. The team of volunteers in Alphington works through the year with a creative and wide-ranging variety of projects. 

Among the many things commended were:

bird-feeders the wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowers places for prayer and quiet reflection a wildlife pondbug-hotels an outdoor seating area made from logs a seasonal grass-cutting plan to encourage wildlife and insects a warm welcome in church good signage disabled access a water bowl for dogs

The St Michael's Team have worked over many years to nurture this beautiful oasis at the heart of the busy community. They hope it will spur them on to do even more in the years to come.
