Ashes represent the spiritual dirt which spoils the image of God in which we are made. We worship, fully assured of the Father’s love and forgiveness. But our focus is not so much on the wonder of his grace, as the enormous void which our sins have created between us and our creator.

As Jesus gathered with his dearest friends and followers in the upper room, on the night before he was handed over and crucified, the shared meal and symbolic acts which he left them, and us, became a gift which unites us, challenges us, comforts us, and strengthens us. On Maundy Thursday, in a calm reflective act of worship, we recall in Communion that deeply moving fellowship meal, and our Lord’s powerful command to love one another.
