Address
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Mary Magdalene High Street Barnstaple, EX31 1BL, United Kingdom

At St Peter and St Mary Magdalene, we are blessed with beautiful Stations of the Cross. Through Lent, we’ll reflect on four of these at every service by hearing a Bible reading, praying, and singing a hymn at each one.
The Stations are copies of those originally painted in 1888-98 by the Belgian artist Jan-Willem Rosier (1858-1931) for the Church of St Ursula in his hometown of Lanaken. Copies by Charles Beyaert of Bruges were acquired by St Mary Magdalene’s, Barnstaple, in 1911/12. On the closure of St Mary Magdalene’s, the Stations were installed in their current location in 1976. Among the other copies made, one is found in St Hubert’s Church, Runkst, Belgium.

Occurring

Venue
St Peter & St Mary Magdalene
Address
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Mary Magdalene High Street Barnstaple, EX31 1BL, United Kingdom

The evening service on Maundy Thursday is well worth venturing out late for. We commemorate the events of the Last Supper, when Jesus commissioned the disciples to share bread and wine in remembrance of him. So Maundy Thursday is the reason we meet Sunday by Sunday for the Eucharist; it’s where it all started. The service also commemorates Christ washing the disciples’ feet and giving the “new commandment” to love one another. Though the disciples later abandoned Jesus, we are invited to watch and pray for a time after the service – for however long you would like – in the presence of Christ in the Lady Chapel, where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.
