The film tells the story of William Carey, a Leicestershire cobbler, who in 1793 set sail for India with his young family to take the Gospel to the people of Bengal. By his death in 1834, he had translated the whole Bible into Bengali and Sanskrit and (in part) into 29 other languages, compiled dictionaries and grammars, and campaigned successfully for the practice of sati (in which a widow would be burnt alive on her dead husband's funeral pyre) to be abolished. He was plagued with official opposition, poor health and family tragedies yet never wavered in his missionary endeavour. He is still celebrated in India for his Bible translations, social reform, horticultural research, founding of Serampore College, the abolition of sati and has been highly revered by generations of Bengalis for his contribution to the renaissance of their culture.
