As part of the Village’s efforts to raise money to mend the hole in Bishopstone Church Roof, a Bug-house has been created in the shape of the Church. This is part of a broader project to develop an ‘ecology garden’ just to the right of the nave entrance.
The Bug-house is constructed of plywood, and the children of Elm Class at Coombe Bissett Primary School have very kindly filled it with twigs, pine- cones, moss and bamboo canes to make the insects feel at home. There are internal partitions so that, for example, aphids don’t have to live with ladybirds. There’s also the small chance that a wren might choose to nest in the tower.
We have of course to consider diversity. The Bug-house has a ramp, to ensure easy access for disabled insects. We considered installing a lift, but anyone who has witnessed a bumble bee trying to press a lift button will understand there are practical challenges to overcome.
The first insects to move in are a musical lot. Should you wander past the Church at midnight and hear the notes of a ghostly organ, it’s far more likely to be coming from the Bug-house than the Church itself. Who knows, there may be concerts next summer?
