Longframlington with Brinkburn
Welcome to the parish of Longframlington with Brinkburn!
Our two principal buildings both date from the 12th century, but St Mary's Longframlington has a 21st century congregation and a 21st century Community Room that provides accommodation for a variety of church and community activities
For some years until 2021, we were linked with the parish of St Michael's Felton, with which we have, in one way or another, had a connection for hundreds of years, and since March 2023 we have also been linked with the parishes of Whittingham and Edlingham with Bolton Chapel, under the supervision of our new Priest in Charge the Rev'd Rich Townend.
We share a YouTube channel with St Michael's, on which we streamed an online Sunday Service of the Word during the coronavirus lockdown period. Rich is currently using it as he explores the various parishes for which he now has responsibility
Brinkburn was, until the dissolution of monastic institutions at the time of Henry VIII, the home to an Augustinian priory. Like most such places, it fell into disrepair, but the priory church was restored in the 19th century by the local landowner. With a population too small to be a separate parish, in the late 19th century it was made part of the new parish of Longframlington with Brinkburn, which had its own vicar from then until 2004. From then until 2021 the two parishes of Longframlington with Brinkburn and Felton shared a Priest-in-Charge. Since March 2023 we have also shared a Priest-in-Charge, the Rev Richard Townend, with the benefice of Whittingham and Edlingham with Bolton Chapel,
Up to the end of 2021 we were very fortunate to enjoy the services of a very experienced honorary associate priest, Michael Hepper, following his retirement to Northumberland. Michael still conducts some services and, with his wife Gisele, continues to play a very full part in parish life.
Although there are no regular services at Brinkburn, there are occasional services there to mark special festivals such as Ascension Day and Christmas as well as events such as the Lifepath week for schools in June. It has become popular as a wedding venue, and we are delighted to welcome many couples attending services at St Mary's during their marriage preparation period. To support couples preparing for marriage, we run, with our friends at Felton, regular marriage preparation sessions, which have proved popular and are highly valued by those who attend.
While the parishes with which we are linked vary in many ways, we share One Faith and work closely with our sister congregations, sharing a variety of activities, including services, administration, etc.
