The work on replacing the silence chamber floor (seen from below as the tower ceiling) is now fully under way and 'John', the 16th century bell, has gone to Somerset to be given a new lease of life. Builders R & J Hogg Ltd are understandably rigorous about safety and the church will be closed from time to time.Specifically, we expect it to be open to visitors up to and including Sunday 14.9.25. After activities that day, the builders plan to pick up the pace and the church is likely to be closed until Harvest Thanksgiving and Harvest Lunch on Sunday 12.10.25. Depending on what remains to be done, there may be a further period of closure until Remembering Loved Ones on 2.11.25.When all is done, in addition to the new silence chamber floor we expect to have a belfry floor, new access ladders from ground level upwards, repaired sound openings (on all sides of the tower and visible from outside at ground level) and the bell rehung and fully operational.
