Rake and Cake Geldeston churchyard
At the front of Trinity College, Cambridge is a tribute to John Ray 1627-1705, a natural historian and botanist whose legacy included developing a classification system for plants. He wrote ‘What first drew me in was the splendid display of meadows in spring. Then I became delighted by the extraordinary shapes and colour of individual plants, and by their entire outward appearance: so wonderfully elegant and graceful! And as I often feasted my eyes upon them, gradually an interest in botany took hold of me, and I conceived a great desire, a passion to know more about it.’ Geldeston churchyard provides a wonderful area for wildflowers, and wildlife including slow worms, lizards grass snake. It is a special place for both wildlife and people and is included as one of Norfolk Wildlife Trusts’ churchyard conservation scheme. To help maintain the wildlife conservation value, the church yard needs to be managed: letting the wildflower grassland set flowers and seeds-for insects and reptiles to enjoy and generations may become inspired as was John Ray.
Once cut the grassland needs to be raked off to reduce the build up of nutrients. You are invited to come along on Saturday morning 19 September 10.30am onwards with rake. gloves and secateurs in hand to help with the raking. Many hands make lightwork! Home made cake will be provided for the rakers. Its good fun and exercise green gym !
Unfortunately the grass does not cut itself ! During the previous week of 7 September we also seek help with cutting the grass so please let us know if you can also help with this in particular if you have a scythe or strimmer you can use.
