Generous support extends life of chancel roof

The architect, engineer and specialist contractor met to decide upon a repair that would preserve as much heritage timber as possible, provide a level plain for the tile battens to be laid upon and reinforce the existing rafters. Following a series of trials, the decision was taken to profile new eave to ridge rafter supports which, although a high cost solution, would make the roof more durable and longer lived than the originally specified work. Although the additional sum was daunting, our grant bodies have responded magnificently and authorised additional uplifts/offered additional support to supplement the original amount granted. Wilby's PCC passes on sincere thanks to Garfield Weston and the Norfolk Churches Trust, together with the Bishop of Norwich Fabric Fund. Additional requests are currently under consideration by two more of our grant funders.

The photo shows the precarious state of the original timbers and how much stronger they will be following the reinforcement from the new eave to ridge profiled rafters. Much work went into this solution and our thanks go to Adam Purple and S&L Restoration Ltd. for their dedication in achieving this result.
