About Us

St. Mary's is the parish church of the Ancient Parish of Penwortham and dates from the 14th century. Although located in an urban area its setting is very attractive being in the midst of ancient woodland. The Chancel dates from the 14th century and the Tower dates from the 15th century. The Nave was rebuilt and enlarged in the 19th century. The church has 2 communion services on a Sunday and a communion service every Thursday morning. The church is open for visitors on Thursdays all year round. We have an active Junior Church called Sparks  and a Messy Church called FAB (Faith and Belonging).

Our church re-ordering project was completed in 2011 and we returned to church over the weekend of 17th, 18th and 19th June 2011. We have installed under-floor heating, removed pews and replaced them with chairs and carried out repairs to the outside of the church. This meant that the church was been closed for almost 2 years.  During that time services were held in our Church Hall on Cop Lane. The church hall land was  sold in 2018 and retirement apartments have now been built on it.
