he annual performance of one of J S Bach’s great Passion settings has been an annual feature of Hereford Cathedral’s musical calendar since 2002, and Bach’s exquisite and unparalleled music perfectly expresses the profound and emotional atmosphere of Holy Week.

This year the cathedral choir will present the St John Passion, the shorter and more immediately dramatic of the two settings, accompanied by Marches Baroque; the soloists will be led by Ruairi Bowen as the Evangelist.

Peter Dyke will conduct this work for the first time at Hereford, during the interregnum following the retirement of Geraint Bowen.

He said ‘The St John Passion is a very special work for me. It’s the first great choral work I got to know as a singer, as an 11-year-old treble. I remember being captivated by Bach’s beautifully expressive chorale harmonies and the drama of the opening chorus. I’m hugely looking forward to it!’

The St John Passion will take place on Tuesday 31 March at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are available in the Front Nave (which includes the front and mid section of the nave) and the Rear Nave. Tickets cost £25 and £18 respectively.
