'Of all the Lent courses in all the world......' we have chosen this one based on the film Casablanca. It may be over half a century old, but it has a timeless status and quality that lasts with its quotable lines, charismatic leads, and pitch-perfect scenes. More importantly for our purposes, it also has much to say about love, hope, and sacrifice. Whilst its wartime context, sadly, remains so relevant in our day. Our headlines remind us we live in a broken, conflicted world where new foes, threats, and troubles still rage, affecting the lives of countless millions. Casablanca concerns itself not with frontline warfare but with the displaced, forgotten refugees. And still today in steadily growing numbers across the world ordinary people flee their homes, face displacement, danger, and starvation daily. In 2013, when this Lent Course was written, more than 50 million people fled their homes from Syria, Afghanistan, and central Africa. Syrian refugees danced on the Rectory lawn in 2017 and 2021 saw the Afghanistan crisis........ The visa-seeking refugees of Casablanca are still with us today in vast numbers.

So we begin our Lent Course this year with a showing of the whole film on Sunday 6th March in St Mary's church at 4.00 pm, popcorn provided!

Starting on March 9th, each Wednesday evening in Lent (March 9th, March 16th, March 23rd, March 30th, and April 6th) we will gather together in St Mary's to watch an extract from the film and explore the realities of its themes which resonate with the scriptural story of God's people. Not just the stories and struggles of refugees, but also the story of our own lives as we explore through the courses main themes how to live with the realities of being 'Trapped in Exile', of 'Wilderness and Waiting', of 'Lamenting', of 'Love and Loss', of 'Seeing through a Glass Darkly, 'Standing up for our beliefs and being torn between desire, 'love and virtue.'

Don't worry if you can't make it to the movie showing as we will be watching clips during the sessions as a springboard for reflection and don't worry if you can't make every session. You may want to buy the accompanying course booklet, available to purchase through Eden.co.uk for £5.71 or Amazon, but this is not essential. There will be a PowerPoint presentation that you can follow each week.

We will be serving tea and coffee from 6.30 pm if you'd like to meet and have a chat before we start at 7 pm. A small donation for each session would be a great help towards the cost of heating and refreshments..... and we might want to consider supporting our own local refugee action group LARA (Langport Area Refugee Action)

If you'd like to know more, please don't hesitate to be in touch. Do please share with anyone you think would be interested in joining us. It's always helpful to know if you're hoping to come so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you.

Here's looking at you.............
