St. John's - An Inclusive Church

Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, with it's distinctive spire, and tiled-roof building, St. John's contrasts with many of Somerset's more familiar towers, and attracts visitors from near and far. It's architectural and historic importance has been recently acknowledged by English Heritage in its status as a Grade I listed building.

Dedicated in 1863, the church was from the outset intended to be for the 'poor people' of Taunton, many of whom lived in the nearby Tangier area. Today, we seek to continue this tradition of openness to all, by striving to be an 'inclusive church'. All visitors receive a warm welcome, and many leave commenting on the sense of peace and tranquility that they have found in a building so close to the town centre.

The church's decorative interior offers much of interest: the fine wrought-iron chancel screen (depicting amongst other things, the animals moving towards Noah's ark); the gold leaf high altar frontal; the carved wood font cover; and the numerous stained-glass windows. There is also the renowned Father Willis organ (see picture gallery), which regularly produces a formidable sound during our acts of worship. This - together with the church's fine acoustics - makes St.John's an ideal venue for the organ, choral, and jazz recitals and concerts that take place throughout the year.

St John's has entered a new era of service to Taunton with the formation of a Benefice with St Mary Magdalene.

The Incumbent will be Rev Rod Corke and the Associate Vicar, with responsibility for St John's, is Rev Jane Eastell, who is listed on the Contacts page.
