It is a major feast of the Church’s year when we recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. Jesus had promised his followers that, although they would not see him after his Ascension, they would receive the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire them. The New Testament book “The Acts of the Apostles” describes how the crowds gathered in Jerusalem – representing many nationalities and speaking many languages – were able to hear the disciples preaching in their own language. The colour most often associated with Pentecost is red, representing the tongues of fire which the Acts of the Apostles describes appearing above the heads of the disciples as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit. It is the same Holy Spirit who empowers us today to be the people of God in this place and at this time. Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing. Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy; act in me O Holy Spirit that my works, too, may be holy; draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I may love that which is holy. Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy; guard me then O Holy Spirit that I always may be holy. Over 70% of people in Burundi face hunger and poverty every single day. Finding work and food is a constant battle, and even those with a roof over their heads often lack necessities like electricity and clean water. Please see our website for ‘Aline’s Story’ which brings to life the abject poverty that so many families like Aline’s have to navigate on a daily basis. If you are able to donate to this annual appeal by Christian Aid there are envelopes at the back of Church and we’ll be sure to pass your donation on. Alternatively, you can donate online at www.christianaid.org.uk Loving God, this week we pray especially for the work of Christian Aid and we thank you for all the people who work for this charity. Help them and us to make our world a better place. We pray for justice, peace and an end to poverty. Help us to see when things are unfair in our world. In our daily lives, help us to think ‘What would Jesus Do?’ Help us to have the courage to stand up for what we know to be right. Amen Men’s Brunch: David Devereux has been part of this year’s M:Power cohort and is hosting a ‘Men’s Brunch’ this coming Saturday in the Broadway Rooms. This week from chapter 15, Jesus says, “I am the true vine.” These are just two of the seven “I Am” statements that appear in John’s gospel. Interestingly, though, the gospel is not the first time that one of these “I Am” statements was used in Scripture. The first time it appears is in the Old Testament. In Exodus 13:4, when God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand that the Hebrew people be allowed to leave their slavery in Egypt, He said, tell Pharaoh, “I Am has sent you.” Since then, God has revealed himself to us in many ways but most importantly through his Son, Jesus Christ. So, when Jesus used “I Am” to describe Himself to His disciples, He was referring back to this expression declaring that He is the I AM. John demonstrated that the “I Am” in Exodus was now physically standing in front of people, ready to be their Shepherd, their Door to the Father, their Life, their Vine, their Light, their Bread of Life, and their Truth. Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing Yourself to us through Your Son Jesus. He continues to reveal Himself to us all the time. Too often Lord we miss Him. Open our eyes Lord to every appearance of Your Son in our lives. Amen!
