The Vicar is taking the service at the Cenotaph. Perhaps the most quoted poem on war, In Flanders Fields, was first published in December 1915 after it was penned by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae during the First World War. After appearing in London’s Punch magazine, it soon become a popular reflection on the sacrifice of war. McCrae's focus was on the peace that follows death, from the perspective of fallen soldiers lying in their graves. In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago, we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved, and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields. Singing for pleasure: It’s a well-known fact that singing is good for the soul and good for our general well-being. So, how would you like to have an hour a week learning new worship songs and singing your favourite hymns? The sessions will take place in the comfort of the Jubilee Room. At the back of church, you’ll find an invitation. Fill it in and pop it in the box provided. We’ll try to pick a day and time that suits the majority. 100 Club winners: Lawrence Dunne, Stephen Ward, David Meekins, Maureen Siddall, Gerald Mathias, Freda Wayman, Moira Greenwood, Muriel Freestone, Sandra Fowler, Claire Naylor, Margaret Pook, Dorothy Angel. St Nicholas Church: Is now officially a Grade II listed building. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has decided to add the Church of St Nicholas to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Listing helps us to mark our beautiful church’s significance and celebrate its special architectural interest. It brings specific protection so that its special interest can be properly considered in managing its future. It’s great news for us and for Fleetwood going forward. Singing for pleasure: It’s a well-known fact that singing is good for the soul and good for our general well-being. Gifts, bottles and chocolate for the day itself are being gratefully received. Anne Newton: After 15 years of looking after the Broadway Rooms for us, Anne has decided it is time for her to pass on the baton. We are extremely grateful to both Anne and Ron who have exercised their Christian service in this way and we send them our best wishes as they enjoy, we hope, some well-earned free time. All Saints and All Souls: All Saints’ Day falls on the 1st November each year and we will celebrate it at our Tuesday Communion this week. It is a reminder of our connectedness as Christians to the church and our conviction that there is a spiritual connection between those in Heaven and on Earth. All Souls’ Day in the Church of England is when we remember our loved ones and all the faithful departed. On All Saints’ there is more of a focus on saints and martyrs, known and unknown, whose faith and example have been passed on to us through the ages. On Thursday, we will be holding a service of Holy Communion at 11.30 am during which we will be marking All Souls, also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. There is a sheet at the back of church for you to append the name(s) you wish to be remembered during that service. Later in the evening there will be another service to which the families of all the funerals we have officiated at in the last twelve months have been invited. The names of their loved ones will be read out and they will have the opportunity to light a candle in remembrance. You are welcome to come along to this service to welcome and support our guests. We will be serving sherry and shortbread at the end of the service. Please remember in your prayers: Louise Clark, David Newton, Peter Dell, Rev Jane Everitt, Rev Martin Keighley, Elizabeth King, Mark Price, Rebekah, Judith Wilkinson and Craig Abson. And the families of Marion Wilson, Derek Scrivener, June Manton and Derek Fenton whose funerals are due to take place.

It was lovely to welcome our Rainbows and lots of new faces too at our family Eucharist. Lunch was amazing and the auction great fun. Massive thanks to David, Joanne and the team for the planning, preparation and delivery of this event. Thank you also for all your generous donations which made it such a success. We sent £515 to the Bishop’s Harvest Appeal and a car load of food and groceries to Streetlife in Blackpool and the Pantry in Fleetwood. Raffle Tickets: Before we know it, the Christmas Fair will be upon us. It’s taking place this year on 25th November and we’ve all be asked to try to sell 5 books of raffle tickets to our friends and neighbours. If we could have the money and stubs back as soon as possible then we’ll be able to gauge how we’re doing. If you need any more just shout and we’ll be sure to get them to you. We are now receiving bottles, chocolates and Christmas gifts for the different stalls, but no pressure. Just give what you can, when you can, and that doesn’t mean every time we ask for something! Prayers for peace: As we grieve with our brothers and sisters in Christ and with all who live in the Land of the Holy One, please let us join in an outpouring of prayer in the name of the Prince of Peace. Heavenly Father, we pray for the many people whose lives have been torn apart by conflict in Israel and Gaza. We pray especially those who have died, those who are grieving, the injured and those now without food, shelter or medical supplies. Strengthen and support the work of all relief organisations. We pray also for those who have the power to bring peace. May they be touched by a spirit of compassion and kindness. Lord hear us as we pray in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please remember in your prayers: Peter Dell, Barry Ellis, Rev Jane Everitt, Rev Martin Keighley, Elizabeth King, Mark Price, Rebekah, and Craig Abson. And the families of Marion Wilson and Derek Fenton whose funerals are due to take place.
