It marks forty days after Jesus’ resurrection, during which time he appeared to more than 500 people. It also marks the beginning of ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ which runs from 29th May until Pentecost on the 8th June. This ecumenical prayer initiative invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus and is now in its 10th year. Every person, household and church are encouraged to pray during the 11 days in their own way. This year we will have prayer stations in St Nic’s to encourage and enable us to use creative ways of praying for God’s Kingdom to come on earth. We’ll say more about the stations at the Ascension Day Eucharist. Fleetwood Foodbank: For 15 years, the foodbank has supported our town’s most vulnerable. Recently demand has surged — in April alone, 681 people were helped, including 117 children — and as a result of increased need the Foodbank is struggling to keep up. Rising costs mean it’s had to reduce the amount and variety of food given out. Though generous donations have been received, expenses now far exceed income. Without increased support, the foodbank risks shutting down by the end of the year. The Pantry is therefore asking 400 people to commit to a standing order of just £10 a month. This would provide a steady £4,000 monthly and will help in planning and responding quickly and more effectively. If you feel able to commit to a regular gift of £10 there are some standing orders available at the back of church, which include a gift aid section. For those of us who pay tax, it increases our gift by 25% at no additional cost to us. Please consider signing up and perhaps invite a friend who doesn’t attend church to do the same. Together, we can ensure no one in our town goes hungry. A huge thank you to everyone who came along or contributed in any way to our APCM on Tuesday evening. What a joyful time it was as we looked back with gratitude over the past year at St Nic’s, celebrating God’s abundant blessings poured out on our community in so many ways. A real highlight of the night was hearing from Jack and Lee, who shared their stories of their journey to St Nic’s and the incredible ways God has been at work in their lives. It was moving, inspiring, and a reminder that we all carry a story worth sharing. As St Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:2–3, our lives are like letters—written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. Each testimony is a living witness to God’s grace. So, let’s keep telling our stories and encouraging one another! On the Horizon – Building Work & Youth Leadership - If you missed the APCM, here’s a quick update: we’re about to kick off our next major building project, which involves scaffolding the entire church tower. Please bear with us during the works—and maybe say a quick prayer for the builders while you're at it! Also, exciting news: in the next few days our advert for a new Youth Leader will go live. Please pray that the right person is drawn to this role and that God gives us wisdom and clarity in the selection process. We’re trusting Him to bring the right leader aboard our ship! Coffee, Cake & Compassion – £250 Raised for Brian House A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for Thursday’s Coffee Morning in aid of Brian House. And a standing ovation to our brilliant bakers! With your help, we raised over £250 to support the vital work of providing care and respite for children with life-limiting illnesses. While the Catholic Church moved swiftly to elect Pope Leo XIV just 16 days after Pope Francis’s passing, we Anglicans are still navigating the murky waters of bureaucracy. Six months after Justin Welby’s resignation and four months since the position became vacant, we’ve yet to even finalize the 17-member Crown Nominations Commission. “Omnishambles” might just be the word of the week! Pope Leo XIV: Sharing in the great joy of Roman Catholic sisters and brothers, Archbishop Stephen welcomed Pope Leo XIV as Bishop of Rome on Thursday, offering prayers for his ministry and giving thanks for his call to be a bridge-builder in a divided world. Archbishop Stephen said: “I share in the great joy of our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers in welcoming His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as the Bishop of Rome. With Christians around the world, I will be praying for the new Pope as he takes on the enormous challenges and responsibilities of the Petrine ministry. Pope Leo XIV’s many years of pastoral experience, his commitment to justice, and his deep spirituality are an example of life lived in service to Jesus Christ. As Anglicans, we give thanks for his call to Christians to be bridge-builders across the divisions of our world, and the divisions that continue to exist between churches. This is something Jesus asks of us. He prays that the church will be one. In his first address, the new Pope spoke of a Church that seeks peace and remains close to those who suffer. Our wounded world needs the justice, healing and hope of Jesus Christ, and we look forward to working with Pope Leo XIV and Roman Catholics in every place to share that love with those in need. They are using their God-given gifts to create high quality products including jewellery, painted artwork, homemade gifts, denim bags made from recycled materials, note books, journals and much more. The shop is open from Tuesday 29th April until Saturday 31st May, Tuesdays Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays each week. Please pop in, if you can, to encourage and support this new initiative. VE Day 80: On 8 May 2025, we're marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day), when the nation will unite to remember the end of the Second World War in Europe. Around the country, events will be taking place to pay tribute to those involved in that conflict, as well as reminding us to pray and work for peace in our communities and in the world. At St Nic’s we will hold a short service of commemoration and prayer at 5.30 pm. On VE Day, churches sounded their bells to signify the end of the war.
