There has been a church on the current site since at least 1180. Although the town's development over the years has left St Leonards standing on the outskirts, it still remains the Parish Church for Deal.
The present building is a cocktail of various architectural styles and includes important features from many, dating back as far as 1180. It has indeed developed in a manner which lead one Bishop to call it "The most cockeyed church in Christendom" It is well worth a visit to discover exactly what he meant!
Today, St Leonards carries on serving the local community as the mother church of a Benefice (group of churches) which includes three other local churches; St Richards, Mill Hill; St Nicholas, Sholden; and St Martins, Great Mongham. Services are held several times a week in all four churches, with each church having its own unique look and feel
The Church has a thriving "Friends of St Leonards" group who organise many events in and around the church to help with fund raising for the preservation of this historic building.(For more details of the church and the Friends, please visit Our Web Site - link to the right)
