Escomb Saxon Church

Escomb Saxon Church community welcomes you to worship God with us in this very special place. Christian worship has taken place here for over 1300 years. We gather every Sunday at 11am, for Holy Communion. Apart from the second Sunday of the month, when we meet for morning prayer at 11am, and Celtic Communion at 4pm.

On 5th Sundays we gather with the other churches in our group (Escomb Group of Parishes). Please contact the vicar or churchwarden for details.

All are very welcome.

Escomb is situated two miles west of Bishop Auckland in the Wear Valley. The church was built around 675 AD with stone probably from the Roman Fort at Binchester. It was originally thought that the church was an offshoot of one of the local monasteries eg Whitby or Hartlepool but this is only one of several possibilities as there are no known written records until 990 AD. The parish of Escomb and Witton Park is in a group with 3 other parishes, Etherley, Hamsterley and Witton-le-Wear.

Safeguarding

Our parish of Escomb and Witton Park is committed to safeguarding everyone, especially children, young people and vulnerable adults from harm. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO).

Our Diocese of Durham’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor who advises our PSO.

If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the PSO, Mrs Gillian Beddow, 01388 602860 [email protected] or the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor, Beth Miller, 07968 034 075 [email protected]

If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority’s children or adult social care services.
