St Stephen's is in Willington, Co. Durham, and over recent years has had a group known as the Eco Ambassadors. They have worked hard along with the PCC to help us become more environmentally aware. As part of their work they have brought the A-Rocha Gold award and now another Gold award. Willington itself has done well in this years Northumbria in Bloom with Willington being awarded Gold in the small town category, our Catholic brothers and sister were awarded Silver Gilt, St Stephen's received their Gold for the religious establishment category and Willington took overall best Gold award for spring bulbs. A lot of work has been put into these by a lot of people. We were fortunate to have our lady Mayor, Dorothy Hales, and her husband, Cllr Charles Hales, join us for worship on Sunday 28th September to present the certificate to the joint chairs of the Eco group, David and Carole Parker. A wonderful effort.
We are pleased to announce being awarded the Eco Church Gold Award. We thank our Eco team for the extremely hard work they have put into this and the support given by the PCC and congregation. This award has been noted by the media.
When babies and children are baptised, they are given a knitted teddy bear with it's own name.Last Sunday, much fun was had at the first Teddy Bear's Picnic held at St. Stephen's Church.Unfortunately, the weather prevented the picnic from being held outside in the churchyard as planned. However, the activities were transferred inside with picnics in the pews, refreshments in the kitchen, and games, including a treasure hunt, and find the teddy's heart located at various points inside the church. Many children brought their teddy bears to join in the fun!
We had a good number of visitors to theses afternoon teas. Lots of chat, making new acquaintances and good food. Thanks to all who attended and to those who provided and served the food.
