On Sunday 4th May we held a traditional prayer book service of Evening prayer with hymns, remembering the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. The service was thoughtfully led by Charles Masheder and included two traditional Easter hymns as well as "I Vow To Thee My Country". The new St George's flag was displayed on a table covered in blue cloth throughout the service, giving a "red, white and blue" focal point. Our organist, Henry, set the scene, playing an organ voluntary based on the tune of "Abide with me" and also Elgar's "Nimrod". At the end of the service the flag was blessed and given to Roger Morris to take up to the top of the tower to raise. He was accompanied by Anna Stanley, the vice-chair of the Parish Council which had purchased the flag for the church. The breeze blew and the flag flew to a cheer and a round of applause! The twenty of us who had gathered then returned into the warmth of the church (the wind was quite chilly!) for a hot drink and tray bakes which included some biscuits made with 1940's recipes.
