Bourton on the Hill church musicians in concert

About 60 or more people gathered in Blockley church on a warm but overcast Sunday afternoon to hear the concert "An afternoon in New Orleans" which featured music inspired by jazz, blues and ragtime. Sophie Wilson (clarinet and piano), Naomi Morris (violin and piano) and Roger Morris (trombone) presented an hour of music which included well-known tunes such as "The Entertainer", "On the sunny side of the street" and "Fascinatin' rhythm" and culminated in a jazz trio by Mike Springer written specifically for clarinet, trombone and piano and entitled NOLA. NOLA is short for New Orleans, Louisiana and the music, in three movements, celebrated the city and also remembered the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina there in 2005. The piece had been commissioned ten years later and its final movement, "Rebirth", was another lively piece, full of optimism for the future of the city. More details about the music that was played can be found in the programme notes which can be downloaded. The music was followed by refreshments which included cupcakes, brownies and cookies. The money raised will go towards helping our church try to meet its financial commitments. Feedback from the audience was very positive so perhaps something similar may be repeated at St Lawrence later in the year..... Watch this space!
