Our traditional carol service which tells the story of Jesus’s birth in music and readings.
Guildford Cathedral hosts a carol service featuring the Cathedral Choir singing carols old and new, with plenty of opportunities for congregational carol singing, on Sunday 21 December at 6 pm (doors open at 5.30 pm) and again on Christmas Day at 4 pm (doors open at 3.30 pm).
Music to be sung by the choir includes Veni. veni - a rhythmically vibrant carol by Adrain Peacock, a haunting setting of the Corpus Christi carol by Benjamin Britten sung by the sopranos and altos in the south gallery with the boy choristers leading the carol in the Crossing, 'Peace on earth' by the Master of the King's Music, Errollyn Wallen and two carols by Sir John Rutter marking his 80th birthday year. The first is the well known and loved 'Shepherd's Pipe carol' and the second is 'Carol of the Magi' which begins with a 'cello solo to be played by chorister Ella. 'I saw three ships' will be sung in an arrangement by Simon Preston, and the service concludes with 'Alleluya, A new work is come on hand' by Peter Wishart, formerly Professor of Music at Reading University, sung from the high altar.
