St Martin's Church, Barholm-with-Stowe

Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking an interest in the Church of St Martin of Tours, Barholm-with-Stowe.

We have at St Martin’s, Barholm with Stowe limited occasions to celebrate Holy Communion together in our church building. This opportunity is usually only when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.

So we look forward to welcoming you on Sunday 29th June at 9am when Fr Aran will lead a service of Holy Communion for Petertide:

The 29th of June is St. Peter’s day, when we remember the disciple who, for all his many mistakes, knew how to recover and hold on, who, for all his waverings was called by Jesus ‘the rock’, who learned the threefold lesson that every betrayal can ultimately be restored by love. It is fitting therefore that it is at Petertide that new priests and deacons are ordained, on the day they remember a man whose recovery from mistakes and openness to love can give them courage. We will remember and pray for, not only St. Peter but for all those called to ministry who have been or are about to be ordained in this season.

Moving on to the month of July, Fr Aran will lead a service of Evening Prayer (BCP) at 6pm on Sunday July 6th, 2025, when we join together listening to scripture, which is the heart of Evening Prayer and singing four well known and traditional hymns. You will be warmly welcomed at the door by Tricia or Colin and given a simple Order of Service booklet and Hymn Book to follow.

We will follow Seasonal Scripture Readings from regular members of the congregation and  join in the singing of four well known, traditional hymns.

With love, and hope to see you soon,

Carole

Who was St. Peter?

Born a humble fisherman of Galilee, St. Peter would become the Catholic Church’s first pope. Chosen by Christ and renamed Peter (his original name was Simon) because of its meaning, Jesus told His followers that on this rock He would build His Church.

Who was St. Paul?

Another saint who underwent a name change, Saul was an influential Jewish leader who became a passionate persecutor of Christians. One day while riding, he was struck down from his horse and blinded by a bright light. At that moment Christ called out to him and asked, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

Saul had an immediate conversion of faith and became Paul. Because his preaching and ministry focused on non-jewish people, he is often called the Apostle to the Gentiles.

St. Paul is considered an apostle because although he did not meet Christ in life, he had a direct and explicit calling from the Lord after his Ascension.

So why are they celebrated together?

Sts. Peter and Paul were both martyred in Rome during the persecution by Emperor Nero. St. Paul was beheaded because he was a Roman citizen. St. Peter was crucified upside down because he told the soldiers that he was not worthy to die in the same way that Jesus did.
