About Us

Welcome to St Michael & All Angels!

St Michael’s has served the Swinley and Whitley districts of Wigan for nearly 140 years and aims to provide an inclusive and welcoming ministry for the parish of today.  Since 2014 we have been part of the All Saints Wigan Team of Churches. This comprises 12 churches in Wigan Town Centre and the area to the North and North-West, including Ince and Haigh and Aspull

Our main Sunday service follows Common Worship.  We have coffee and an informal get-together after the service, so if you’re new to St Michael’s do make yourself known to us.  You will be made very welcome.  We are “family friendly” and have a children’s corner and a Sunday School.  Once a month the Scouts and Guides attend for a parade service.

The 8 a.m. service on a Sunday morning is said, and follows the Book of Common Prayer.

Our midweek communion service is on Thursday mornings.

The Parish has an active social life including a Reading Group, the Institute (with three snooker tables), and a Friday Luncheon Club (in church). Full details are in our monthly Parish Magazine.  We also have "open house" for coffee on Wednesday mornings.

A variety of activities including drama groups and dancing take place in the nearby Parish Hall.  The parish has active Scout and Guide units.  Their headquarters is across the road from church.

There is also a Church Institute for snooker and social activities in a building at the rear of the Scout Headquarters.

Our church building itself is of much interest, being by G.E. Street, an eminent Victorian architect.  It is in the Early English style. G. E. Street also designed Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin and the Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London.

We are open to visitors on Saturday mornings between 10.00 a.m. and 12 noon, as well as at service times.

Do come and meet us!
