The 376th Lion Sermon by Professor Vincent Rougeau

Occurring
for 1 hour, 30 mins
Venue
The Guild Church for Workers at St Katharine Cree
Address
86 Leadenhall Street City of London, EC3A 3DH, United Kingdom

The 376th Lion Sermon will be given at a Choral Evensong, sung by Lloyd's Choir, starting at 6pm. All are welcome.

The preacher will be Professor Vincent Rougeau, who is the 33rd President of the College of the Holy Cross, a leading Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, MA. He is the college's first lay and first Black president. Before assuming the position, Rougeau served as the dean of Boston College Law School from 2011 to 2021 and was the president of the Association of American Law Schools. He is a popular and widely respected expert in legal education and Catholic social thought.

We will be welcoming President Rougeau to speak about contemporary challenges for civil liberties in higher education in the US, and why this matters for all of us as we consider the exercise of power in public life.

Professor Rougeau is the first leader of a Catholic institution to give the Lion Sermon since it was founded by Sir John Gayer—who was himself imprisoned for his religious and political views and activities.

The Guild Church for Workers at St Katharine Cree

The Guild Church of St Katharine Cree is a church for all workers in the heart of the City of London. We offer a place to pray and a community to belong to.

Rooted in a rhythm of Christian prayer and worship, we accompany and support workers in London to build a just and hopeful future for the City, and to deepen their connection with their community and with Jesus Christ.

We also have a Spanish-speaking ministry, welcoming Spanish-speaking workers to participate fully in our community, prayer, and worship.

Please note our commitment to safeguarding:

The Guild Church of St Katharine Cree is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer(s), PSOs. The Diocese of London’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
