Additional information

Henry Purcell wrote his stage masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, in the early 1680s. He based the story on the account by the Roman poet Virgil of the doomed love affair between Dido, the Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, the Trojan Prince voyaging to find a new home for his Trojan followers after their defeat by the Greeks. Purcell's music is exquisite and the opera has humour as well as tragedy. Members of the choir will take the lead roles, and Richard Morrison conducts.
