The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday

Occurring
for 1 hour, 15 mins
Venue
Newcastle Cathedral
Address
Newcastle Cathedral, St Nicholas Square Newcastle, NE1 1PF, United Kingdom

On Maundy Thursday, we remember the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest. This is a time to reflect on love, service and sacrifice as we prepare our hearts for the solemnity of Good Friday and the hope of the Resurrection.

As part of the service, there will be the opportunity to participate in a foot-washing ceremony. This symbolic act, for those who walked on dusty roads in open shoes, may be best expressed these days in our washing of hands before eating. Therefore, this year, we are also offering the option of a hand-washing ceremony as an alternative, drawing us into the same intimacy of the moment when Jesus knelt to wash the feet of his disciples.

The service will conclude with the Watch, a time of quiet prayer and reflection, expected to end at approximately 9:30pm.
