About Us
We are one of three churches in Haltwhistle, working together to be a church for people of all ages, an open church which welcomes everyone, a growing church both in numbers and in personal discipleship and a church which lies at the heart of our community. In terms of bricks and mortar we look after the oldest and most historic building in Haltwhistle, built in the 12th century, an exceptionally complete Early English parish church - St Aidan was sent from Iona to convert Northumbria and it is suggested that Aidan's ministry in Haltwhistle is preserved in the place name of 'Edens Lawn', which includes the churchyard and land to the west of the church, probably taken from the Celtic 'Llan Aidan'. We have windows by Burne-Jones, Philip Webb, Ford Maddox Brown and Kempe and these have been cleaned and refurbished over the last year. We keep our historic church open during the day for tourists and local visitors but our main focus is the local community. We help fund a full time priest for Haltwhistle, Greenhead and Beltingham with Henshaw parishes. This is not cheap, but is worthwhile and he is greatly valued by our community both for doing baptisms, weddings and funerals but also for leading our regular services (twice a week) and special services for national and seasonal occasions. Having a large building, we have large heating bills during the winter months. Our Social Committee work in conjunction with the PCC to organise coffee mornings, charity fayres and outreach events for our church. One of our wardens organises community singing events as well as an occasional benefice choir for joint services with our linked parishes.
