Steane Church was rebuilt in 1620, replacing an earlier 13th.c church.

Steane as a Church was united with Hinton in 1752.

As with Hinton, the Church contains a number of important monuments, of which the most striking is a marble altar commemorating Sir Thomas Crewe's wife. The marble altar in Durham Cathedral suggests a linkage through another member of the Crewe family, Nathaniel, who became Bishop of Durham in 1674. Nathaniel is commemorated together with his wife in another distinctive monument.

Under an 18th. century covenant, there are required to be held at least six services a year at St. Peter's. With no power to light the church, these tend to be held as an evensong during the summer months with guest preachers when possible, and the congregation seated mainly in box pews
