Vacancy - watching and praying for a new incumbent “Vacancy” is one of two technical terms – the other being “inter-regnum” – used by the Church of England to describe a parish (or parishes/benefice/plurality) which is temporarily without a Vicar or Rector. Sadly (for us in Ventnor and Bonchurch) our Vicar Revd Tom Burden recently left to answer the call to serve in Jerusalem as leader of the missionary organisation CMJ. You can read about it here: https://anglican.ink/2025/04/10/new-director-appointed-to-lead-cmj-israel/ Our love and prayers accompany Tom and his wife Katherine. Since mid-August 2025, therefore, we in the parishes of Ventnor and Bonchurch have officially been in vacancy. Looking on the bright side … our last vacancy, which began when Revd Hugh Wright retired in September 2023, lasted only (“only”!) 7 months. And we have Revd Jo Nicholson, ordained Priest in June, as Assistant Curate - see Ordination on the Holy Trinity page of the Ventnor Churches web-site: https://www.ventnorchurches.org.uk/copy-of-holy-trinity/ We also have some wonderful retired clergy who have PTO - “permission to officiate”.
